The official-sounding one:
With influences ranging from mythology and Shakespeare, to science fiction & current social issues, I integrate my rural Iowa upbringing, and a background in archaeology and theater, with character-driven stories. I hold an honors degree in Cultural Anthropology from The University of Chicago, and my scripts have been honored as:
- Athena/IRIS finalists
- Nicholl quarterfinalists
- A 2016 Bitch List honoree
- Half The World Literati Prize honoree
- Screencraft semifinalists
- Second-rounders for Sundance
- Second-rounders for Austin
Active in the screenwriting community, I volunteer as a Happy Hour representative for The Blacklist in Chicago. An experienced actor and theater production manager, I’m also an educator and anthropologist, working over 15 years in museum exhibit development.
Now the fun one…
I hail from a two-generation plumbing, electrical, and HVAC family business in southern Iowa, where I was raised on a love of theater, Bond films, and vintage British sports cars (but American muscle pre-‘71 does it for me too).
Mary Poppins, Gosford Park, Out of Africa, From Russia with Love, Dazed and Confused, A River Runs Through It, Delicatessen, and Fargo.
What I wish I’d made:
Under the Skin, The Empire Strikes Back, The Bourne Identity, The Met, Frank, The Sutton Hoo display at The British Museum, The Others, Velvet Goldmine, The City Museum, Pan’s Labyrinth, Being John Malkovich, Wuthering Heights (with Olivier), The National WWI Museum and Memorial, Michael Clayton, Only Lovers Left Alive, Eternal Sunshine…, Sam Mendes’ production of King Lear, The Accademia’s hall for David, and pretty much every Merchant-Ivory film.
Interests: design and historic preservation, knitting, Formula One racing, occasional consulting in museum, education, and design fields. I’m also a member of The Story Broads.
